I am having a heck of a time getting a new hard drive to work for both Windows and Mac. I read initially, that Mac’s could not handle NTFS drive types – so I started looking for alternatives. I decided to try out the exFAT type (because I have several files in excess of the 4 gb FAT32 max.) It has been a disaster!
It seemed like it was working at first – I was able to put files on it from my Windows machine, and then from my Mac machine. So I loaded a bunch of files on it to test. Spent a bit of time playing around with it. Looked good – but as soon as I started passing it between the Windows and the Mac, things started going hey-wire. First, it started failing to be recognized at all. Then it started to be recognized once a reboot happened while it was plugged in. By this point I was thinking, “Man, I can’t use exFAT – Time to reformat.” Yeah, right! Now it keeps telling me that I don’t have sufficient permissions to format the drive.
Maybe it’s a physical drive issue. Either way – it is truly annoying. Sometimes I simply get frustrated with Apple – would it really have been that hard to add an NTFS driver to the mix – considering the millions upon millions of drives that use NTFS?
